Olomouc

Olomouc, the historical capital of Moravia and the administrative centre of the Olomouc Region. With a population of about 100,000 inhabitants, the city ranks as the sixth-largest in the Czech Republic. Lonely Planet included it in its list of “Ten hidden gems of Europe” and called it “arguably the Czech Republic’s most beautiful town”.


Holy Trinity Column

Since 2000 the Holy Trinity Column has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc dominates the city centre and its grandiosity easily takes a visitor’s breath away. It is the largest group of Baroque statues within a single sculptural monument in Central Europe. The column reaches a height of 35 metres and its lower part houses a seasonally accessible chapel.


Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art in Olomouc is located in an Art Nouveau building at the Republic Square and contains collections of fine and commercial arts. The so-called „Three-nave hall“(Trojlodí) and the cabinets on the first floor serve to hold temporary exhibitions of Czech and international art. The Museum specializes in visual art of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Archbishop’s Palace in Olomouc

The Archiepiscopal Palace in Olomouc, a significant example of Baroque palace architecture in Moravia, is not only a living seat of Olomouc archbishops and other people involved in the daily life of the Church, but also a place marked by history and famous people.

Olomouc Archdiocesan Museum

The whole museum complex underwent a complex conservation reconstruction from 1998 to 2006. Part of the project of the Prague architectural office HŠH architekti was, besides building offices, depositories, a photo studio and a refinishing workshop, the reconstruction of the building of the capitular deanery and its functional link to the Romanesque episcopal palace. Olomouc Archdiocesan Museum – the holder of the title “European Heritage Label”.

Regrettably, the Musem is closed because of the reconstruction and will reopen in December 2022 (another reason to come back to Olomouc).


Saint Wenceslas Cathedral

St Wenceslas’ Cathedral with its two-tower face is an integral part of the city skyline. The third, the southern tower standing 100.65 meters high, is the tallest church tower in Moravia (and the second-highest in the country). The three-naved hall of the church comes from the original medieval layout.

Under the presbytery, there is a crypt accessible by two side staircases. On the south side of the church, there is an entrance to the Mannerist St Stanislaus’ Chapel. Tombstones from the 16th and 17th centuries are situated on each side of this entrance. The cathedral’s organ is one of the finest Romantic period instruments in the Czech Republic.


Olomouc Parks and Gardens

Olomouc parks belong to the historical and cultural treasures of the city. The first Olomouc public park, the Rudolph alley, founded by the Archbishop of Olomouc, was a popular place for outings of the Olomouc population as early as the 1820s.

Today Olomouc boasts three large parks covering more than 47 hectares – Smetana Park, Čech Park and Bezruč Park. Worth visiting are the botanical collection greenhouses – the Palm-, the Cactus-, the Tropical- and the Subtropical greenhouses with a unique collection of plants and trees. A Botanic Garden and a Rose garden (Rosarium) are accessible from the Bezruč Park.


Pilgrimage Basilica of Our Lady of the Holy Hill

The Baroque pilgrimage church with a two-tower frontage is a distinctive landmark of the landscape around Olomouc. Adjoining the church building, there are side wings with an attic carrying statues of 12 apostles and two saints – Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch. Behind the church, there are a cloister and the Chapel of the Virgin Mary. The ceiling of the single-naved interior is vaulted over by a massive dome. The nave is flanked by side chapels


Fort Science – Interactive science centre of Palacký University Olomouc

The progressive Palacký University Interactive Science Centre is an oasis of science. It combines the unique atmosphere of the place and the power to educate and inspire students and both children and their parents. The architecturally exceptional building served as an artillery depot in the 19th century. However, in 2015, the fort finally became a haven for knowledge.
